Photography school with Bright Learning

Being a creative individual and wanting to take better photos for my blog, I took a short photography course with Bright Learning in Brisbane.

The course I completed was An Introduction to Digital SLR Photography, a basic course for novices like me who have no idea how to use a Digital SLR camera.

The course ran over four weeks, one night a week, and included subjects such as camera basics, shooting basics and camera accessories.

Oliver Alliart from Reflexion Photography ran the class and I not only learnt some great skills from him but also from other classmates.

We were given homework and here are some of my results:

A New Year, A New You With Balayage Hair from Stefan

Happy New Year Everyone! It's my first post for 2012 and there's nothing like starting the year off with a new look!

Having the same hairstyle of long layered hair with a side part for years and years I wanted a change, not in length but in colour (can't live without my long hair).

I wanted to still keep the length and do something that wasn't too drastic. A hairstyle that was easy to maintain was a must because a busy bee like me doesn't have hours to spend in front of the mirror.

In comes Stefan Hairdressing to the rescue, yay!

BALAYAGE HAIR

As defined on Vogue:

Balayage is a French colouring technique that was developed in the 1970s. It’s a freehand technique where the colour is applied by hand rather than using the traditional foiling or cap highlighting techniques. Balayage can be used in even the shortest pixie crop however the best results is in hair below the shoulders.

After my initial consultation with Raychelle from Stefan Hairdressing Queensplaza Brisbane*, she recommended the Balayage colouring technique and discussed what colour would be suitable for me.

I went with the Stefan Balayage Colour and Style Cut package that they had which included a wash, style cut, balayage colour and blow dry.

The application of the Balayage technique started off by teasing my hair and applying the colour in sections to the bottom half of the hair. The teasing ensured that the colour blended in so that there was not a defined line of colour.

After the colour had time to develop, I then had the wash, cut and finish and look at me now!

My thoughts on Balayage hair

Because the colour is on the ends you should condition the ends of the hair to keep it looking healthy
For me, Balayage hair looks best when there is curl/waves applied
The length of the balayage colour is determined by you and your hairdresser, you can choose to have the colour start closer to the roots or from the middle
Very low maintenance, no need to worry about your roots!

Overall, I love my new look and will maintain my Balayage hairstyle. Thanks Stefan and Raychelle!

Sun, Sleep & Seafood at Port Douglas

Holiday season is upon us and just like everyone else, I took a long weekend away to Port Douglas where I took a well needed break (from blogging, nooooooo!).

SUN

Port Douglas in Tropical North Queensland is about a 40 minute drive away from Cairns, Queensland. What can you do there? See the Great Barrier Reef of course!

I headed to the Great Barrier Reef with Quicksilver Cruises and Tours. While there, I went snorkling and said hello to the fish!

SLEEP

Sheraton Mirage Port Douglas is where I called home for the next few days. Staying in the Superior Lagoon View Room, I woke up around noon to enjoy the water views! There was never a day where my feet didn't touch the water.

SEAFOOD

Nothing makes a holiday better than great food! I lost count of the number of fresh oysters I enjoyed while having the Seafood Buffet at the hotel.

BONUS: as a guest of the hotel the buffet was discounted!

Not to mention I also had the buffet breakfast each morning.

I also took advantage of the award winning Italian restaurant Bucci, located on the main shopping street in Port Douglas. My tastebuds gave this restaurant an A+ and the service was perfect too.

My recommendations - the Wagyu Beef Lasagne and if you can't decide, go for the dessert platter that has abit of everything!

Paint The Town Red With Berber - Illamasqua Pure Pigment

Illamasqua's Pure Pigment in Berber is an auburn or red shimmer from the Theatre of The Nameless collection.

It comes packaged in a clear plastic squarish body with a black lid. The lid pops open to reveal a central opening to access the pigment. I love it how I can also use the plastic top of the body as a palette to remove or add more pigment to my brush.

Berber is one of my absolute favourites! The pigment itself consists of a red pigment mixed with fine silver shimmer. It is easily blendable and highly pigmented which shows the high quality of Illamasqua products. Made in Germany, Berber gives a high shine and glittery metallic finish.

The Results

Use the pigment sparingly to create an everyday 'pop' look or apply it more daringly at night.

Eating, Breathing & Living Beauty At ABBW

During the weekend of the 24th of September, the first ever The Australian Beauty Bloggers Weekend (ABBW) event took place. This event encompassed beauty bloggers from around Australia who participated in eating, breathing and living all things beauty. Not to mention we all looked fab too, well we are beauty bloggers!

On the itinerary were events such as the International Make Up Tradeshow (IMATS), Beauty Directory Event, Maxted Thomas PR Gala Dinner and Face of Australia's Masterclass. Bahar Etminan from Rescu was the inspirational and somewhat controversial guest speaker for the weekend.

Having attended IMATS on the first day I was famished. Back at the hotel I ordered room service and boy was I hungry!

My time spent during the weekend made me realise that as a beauty blogger we do not just review beauty products but we live for it!

You Make Me Go Grrrr OPI Nail Apps in Tigress

I was introduced to OPI's Nail Apps after attending the Primped Look Book Event. These nail stickers caught my eye because they were foil which I have not tried as yet not to mention the awesome print!

The design I chose was Tigress, a tiger print with white, black, silver and gold colours in a foil finish. These also lasts for 1-2 days.

The pack contains a single sheet of 16 individual nails strips and a nail file. On the sheet are also simple instructions on how to apply.

Super easy instructions

Verdict

After following the simple instructions I was not very happy with the end result as I could not get the sides to stick down. Constant rubbing of the strips, as the instructions said did not help much with adhesion...grrrrr!

Because the sides weren't sticking, my hair would catch on the stickers. Washing my hands or taking a shower made the nail stickers less adhesive as the water would go through the gaps. I can see now why they would only last 1-2 days.

I did love the print however and even got complimented on them at work when I only had them on for 2 days. Foil nail stickers are also more eye catching as they are shiny.

Removal was super easy and after 2 days, with the sides of my nails more exposed, I decided to peel them off. No need to use nail polish remover.

Would I repurchase?

I would only repurchase to have a second go at application to see if I can get the sides to stick down, otherwise no. Unless I had a very special occasion to attend where I needed this print then yes, I would repurchase. Other than that, I think I'd stick with the normal OPI nail polishes.

The end result

No drying time
Unique designs
The shape of the strips fitted well to the shape of my nails
These were easy to remove, just peel off
Comes with a nail file, you can never have too many nail files
Attracted attention because of the shiny reflectiveness of the foil finish

Cons

Extremely hard to stick down
Only lasts for 1-2 days
For the amount of wear you get from them, these are quite pricey at AU $19.95 per pack
Are quite thick and therefore harder to file the excess off

Make Up Trends

Achieving the pastel eyes look

The make up trends for this season are punchy pops of colour, whether it be a bright eye or lip. Skin is luminous while still being natural such as embracing your freckles and not hiding them.

Mauve/purple eyeshadow colours are popular. Pastel eye shadows can also be used for everyday wear to add the colour without being too bright. Big strong brows are also in.

Hair Trends

Hair trends for spring/summer are hairstyles with movement and nothing too structured. Mousse, such as Prive's Volumizing Froth mousse can achieve this look without the mousse "crunch".

Nail Trends

OPI greys

The colour to wear on tips are greys which is the new neutral. And for toes it's coral. Nail art is also very popular.

REVIEW

I was lucky enough to trial the BB cream and I must say I was quite pleased with the results it gave me. I've trialled the product for two weeks now and it has become a staple in my make up bag.

The colour that suited me was the medium. The product itself has a light fragrance which I quite liked. I normally don't like strong overpowering fragrances in my make up products but the fragrance in Garnier's BB cream was pleasant.

The product was easy and super quick to apply, just slap it on and out the door you go, no need to spend time blending it into the skin. The packaging also makes it easy to squeeze out the product.

I found that the cream gave more of a medium coverage. Any areas that needed more coverage I applied more product.

I love how it has spf in it which shortens my daily routine of having to apply a separate spf.

The size of the product is 50ml so small enough to throw it in your handbag. And the price is even better, only retailing for AU $13.95, what great value!

I've been trialing the Rexona Woman Clinical Protection Anti-Perspirant Deodorant in Shower Fresh.

Rexona Woman Clinical Protection Anti-Perspirant Deodorant

It provides "Clinical strength wetness & odour protection for heavy sweating" which uses TRIsolid™ body responsive technology. This technology reacts with moisture from your sweat glands to create a barrier to stop moisture, therefore reducing wetness. More fragrance molecules are also released when you produce more odour.

The deodorant works by turning the bottom wheel until the product comes though the top holes. With each turn, you hear a "click" so you know how much to dispense.

The directions on the deodorant also states to apply before bed.

Product Name and Size	Rexona Woman Clinical Protection Anti-Perspirant Deodorant in Shower Fresh. Size is 45mL.
Packaging/Size	The deodorant comes in a white box. The deodorant is encased in a semi-transparent plastic.
Colour/texture/smell	The fragrance is called 'Shower Fresh'. The product is a white cream that goes on clear when applied.
Pros	What I liked: Easy to use, you can tell how much you are dispensing as it makes a clicking sound Because it is made from semi-transparent plastic you can see how much is left before you need to purchase Plastic means that if you drop it, it won't break It does what it says, it gave me 48 hour protection with no wetness and odour It does not leave white marks No stickiness like some other deodorants Don't have to use alot of it, about one to two clicks per armpit.
Cons	What I didn't like: The smell isn't my favourite, I prefer more subtle smells For a deodorant it is pricey, but you don't need to use that much product.
Price	AUD $13.99
Would I repurchase?	If the product came in a fragrance that I liked, yes I would repurchase.
Comments and/or recommendations	Because I don't sweat that much in winter I don't think this deodorant is right for me now. I think it will be more handy when summer comes. I did find that it protected me while at the gym and will keep using it then.

It's a YES from me!

I had the pleasure of attending Brisbane's Kiehl's Ultra Facial Masterclass where I learnt more about the range as well as abit about my own skin.

At the start of the Masterclass we were greeted by the Kiehl's beauticians and learnt about the skin. We also tested out own skin to see how oily it was. Because it was the end of the day, for me I knew I would have an oily T-zone - shine be gone!

The darker the grey area is, the oilier the skin is, bottom one is my oily forehead!

Some facts about the skin

We lose the most moisture in our skin between the hours of 11am - 4pm
You should always double cleanse, the first cleanse to remove make up, the second cleanse to clean your actual skin, ie dirt and grime from the pores
The common causes of oily skin are hormones, external irritants, diet.

Thanks to Roadshow Films and Birch Carrol and Coyle Garden City, I attended Queensland's premiere of the movie Horrible Bosses.

As a VIP guest I strutted down the red carpet, enjoyed a glass of champagne and ate mini hot dogs while rubbing shoulders with some of the stars of the movie, Jason Sudeikis and Charlie Day!

I'm always happy to get some make up tips from the experts, Ashley Rose's tips were:

Instead of using concealer for dark circles under the eyes which can creep into fine lines, use a dusting of powder illuminator
When applying powder, tap brush downwards to remove excess or tap brush upwards for the powder to seep into the bristles
If you have a good cleanser you do not need to double cleanse.

I haven't worn real nail polish since I've been rocking nail polish stickers so I was happy to paint on some Chanel since I purchased it a few months ago while on holidays.

I decided to try the Chanel Le Vernis Nail Colour in 567 Beige Petale. This colour is a nude coloured polish that is very sheer. When applied you can hardly see any colour at all. I applied it thickly to get more colour onto the nail but lost count after five coats.

If doing a french manicure, this colour would be perfect as the base.

At the moment I'm going through a nail sticker phase. Why? Because they are super easy to apply and there are some great designs.

One of the other designs from Sally Hansen that I quite like is the Kitty, Kitty pattern, a champagne/beige base with a dark brown and orange leopard print...grrrr!

And yes I'm on the prowl too because I'm single, hehehe

The Sally Hansen Salon Effects Real Nail Polish Strips themselves comes in a variety of sizes with a mini nail file and cuticle stick.

Super easy to apply, I even got complimented on them the first day of wearing it, happy!

Spring has Sprung! Chinese Blossom Nails from Sephora

While on my European holiday last month I came across the Sephora store in Paris, France, on the main shopping strip, the Champs Elysees, yes!

Holding myself back from buying everything, I got super excited over the Sephora nail patch art. These are sticker nail polish strips, similar to the Sally Hansen Real Nail Polish Strips which I have reviewed previously here and here.

I purchased the Sephora Nail Patch Art in A04 Chinese Blossom. It is a black base with a floral print in pinks and blues.

The pack contains 2 strips of 8 adhesive nail stickers with an instruction pamphlet. This is for one application only.

The nails strips themselves were easy to apply. You can re-stick them on if you did not apply it correctly in the first place.

To remove the excess strips the instructions were to fold the excess and tear away. I actually used a nail file to remove the excess which I found easier.

The results were beautiful floral nails in no time with NO drying time! As the packaging states, these nail patch art is:

100% easy
100% trendy
100% shiny
zero drying time

And I agree!I have even gotten compliments on this <3 <3

Pros:

Beautiful, unique designs
Easy to apply with no drying time

Cons:

The sides were harder to stick down, hence the wonky sides in the above pic
No perfect fit sizes. I did find that Sally Hansen had more better fitting sizes for my petite nails
Already had chips on the second day
